The Illinois Iron Furnace is the only remaining iron furnace structure in the state of Illinois. Iron was manufactured at the Illinois Furnace by the charcoal blast method. The exterior of the furnace was manufactured of large limestone blocks quarried near the town of Cave-In-Rock.

Originally though to have been constructed by prehistoric the Adena culture, scholars now think it was built by the Fort Ancient culture (1000-1650 CE), an Ohio Valley-based, mound-building society.  The Fort Ancient culture was influenced by the contemporary Mississippian culture society based along the mid-Mississippi River valley and extending as far north as the Great Lakes area.
