Tlahuac Lake, Mexico City, Mexico -- The dawn of a new day appears behind the Iztaccihuatl volcano illuminating the ecological reserve of Lake Tlahuac in the Chalco Valley, southeast of Mexico City. The name Iztaccihuatl means The White Woman in the Nahuatl language, although for its profile the volcano is also called The Sleeping Woman. Dozens of waterfowl still rest on the water. An ancient legend Tepaneca tells that Iztaccíhuatl's father, King Tezozomoc, sent the brave warrior Popocatépetl to war, promising him the hand of his beautiful daughter if he returned victorious. After receiving the news that her beloved warrior had died in battle, the beautiful princess Iztaccíhuatl allowed herself to die of pain. But in reality Popocatepetl was not dead. After returning and learning of the tragic fate of his fiancée, he too let himself die of sadness for losing her. The Gods, shocked by so much love, then decided to cover them with snow and turned them into mountains. From those remote times, the beautiful Iztaccíhuatl rests on the profile of her mountain and the sun rises behind her every day. The brave warrior continues by his side in the form of the majestic Popocatepétl volcano, protecting the dream of his beloved princess.
