The wolf willow, also known as silverberry, is a shrub native to Canada. Its Latin name is Elaeagnus commutata. It produces small flowers (about 5 mm across) that are yellow on the inside and silvery on the outside, and have a very fragrant musky-sweet smell. The fruit is a dry, silvery berry with a large, stony dark brown seed with yellow grooves or stripes. Indigenous peoples on the prairies used the seeds to make necklaces or to decorate the fringes on clothing. When settlers arrived, they learned this art from the Indigenous peoples, and wolf willow seed necklaces became a gift item to send home. Wolf willow can be found throughout the prairies on coulees, cutbanks and hillsides. Although it is called wolf willow, this plant species is not actually a willow. Instead, it belongs to the Elaeagnaceae (Oleaster) family. Wolf willow is used as an ornamental shrub in landscaping, and its essential oil is also used for aromatherapy.
