Several flower spikes of the giant, ground-dwelling Blue Puya Bromeliad (Puya berteroniana), called the Chagual in Chile. A close relative of the pineapple this Bromeliad is unusual in growing rooted in earth rather than being an epiphyte on the branches of a tree. It is also very unusual in the Plant Kingdom in having turquoise flowers, which are usually pollinated by hummingbirds when the plant produces its one and only flower spike after about five years of growth and then dies.
