Originally built in 1682 and rebuilt in 1721, it served as a trade outpost, including for the transatlantic slave trade. The fort was strategically positioned to facilitate the export of enslaved Africans and the import of goods like tobacco, alcohol, and weapons. Unlike many other European forts on the West African coast, it remained under Portuguese control until 1961. 'Feitoria de Ajudá'.
