Ollantaytambo, Peru - August 25, 2014: Ollantaytambo is a town and an Inca archaeological site in southern Peru some 60 kilometers northwest of the city of Cusco. It is located at an altitude of 2,792 meters (9,160 feet) above sea level in the district of Ollantaytambo, province of Urubamba, Cusco region. During the Inca Empire, Ollantaytambo was the royal estate of Emperor Pachacuti who conquered the region, built the town and a ceremonial center. At the time of the Spanish conquest of Peru it served as a stronghold for Manco Inca Yupanqui, leader of the Inca resistance. Nowadays it is an important tourist attraction on account of its Inca buildings and as one of the most common starting points for the four-day, three-night hike known as the Inca Trail. Windmills historical in Consuegra, Toledo Spain
Between 900AD and 1200AD native people inhabited the Painted Desert east of the San Francisco Peaks of Arizona.  In an area so dry it would seem impossible to live, they built pueblos, harvested rainwater, grew crops and raised families.  Their way of life was the key to survival in this harsh landscape.  These people survived here, farming one of the warmest and driest places on the Colorado Plateau.  They developed the skills to farm the land and endure hardship in an area where many would not.  These ancestral Puebloan people used petrified wood not only for tools but also as a building material.  Located on top of a small hill, this structure was built almost entirely of petrified wood and sealed with mud mortar.  These thought-provoking remains bring to mind the innovativeness in building and the environmental challenges faced by these indigenous peoples.
