The dawn light illuminates the majestic and splendid Italian-style Gothic lateral facade of the Duomo, in the heart of the medieval city of Siena, in central Italy, while dozens of swallows fly in the sky. The construction of the metropolitan cathedral, dedicated to the Assumption of Mary, was completed between 1215 and 1263, becoming one of the religious architectural masterpieces of the Romanesque and Italian Gothic style. Siena is one of the most beautiful Italian cities of art, in the heart of the Tuscan hills, famous for its immense artistic and historical heritage and for the Palio, where the seventeen old districts of the city compete every year in Piazza del Campo in one of the oldest horse racing in the world. Since 1995 the historic center of Siena has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Image in high definition format.

Typical Italian scene: duomo in Siena
Siena, located in the heart of Tuscany and surrounded by hills, is one of the most beautiful medieval cities in Italy.\nThe fulcrum of the city is the famous Piazza del Campo, with its particular shell shape, where the famous Palio is held, one of the most important events for all the Sienese. The Palio di Siena is a passionate horse race that takes place every year in July and August and its origins seem to date back to the seventeenth century.\n\nAccording to legend, Siena was founded by Senio, son of Remus, and in the city there are several statues depicting the mythical Romulus and Remus suckled by the she-wolf. Piazza del Campo has been the central nucleus of Siena since the time of the Romans, who had their Forum here.\nThe square was repaved during the Government of the Nine, a semi-democratic group in power between 1287 and 1355, with a subdivision into nine sections in memory of the Government and symbolizes the cloak of the Madonna that protects the city.\n\nThe Campo is dominated by the red Palazzo Pubblico and its tower, called Torre del Mangia. The Palazzo Pubblico, as well as the Duomo of Siena, was built during the Government of the Nine, which was the period of maximum economic and cultural splendor of Siena.

Siena Cathedral, Tuscany, Italy– 25 April 2010,The cathedral was designed and completed between 1215 and 1263 on the site of an earlier structure. It has the form of a Latin cross with a slightly projecting transept, a dome and a bell tower. The dome rises from a hexagonal base with supporting columns. The dome was completed in 1264. The lantern atop the dome was added by Gian Lorenzo Bernini. The bell tower has six bells, where the oldest one was cast in 1149. The nave is separated from the two aisles by semicircular arches. The exterior and interior are constructed of white and greenish-black marble in alternating stripes, with the addition of red marble on the façade. Black and white are the symbolic colors of Siena, etiologically linked to black and white horses of the legendary city's founders, Senius and Aschius. There are thirty-five statues of prophets and patriarchs grouped around the virgin. The finest Italian artists of that era completed works in the cathedral. These artists were Nicola and Giovanni Pisano, Donatello, Pinturicchio, Lorenzo Ghiberti, and Bernini.
