Palo Duro Canyon State Park, Texas, USA: eroded cliff side - Geologic time periods marked by major changes in the fossil record - rock strata covering the Permian age, Triassic age, Miocene-Pliocene age and at the top the Quaternary age - this cliff includes the Permian-Triassic (P-T) extinction boundary, colloquially known as the Great Dying, that took place about 248 million years ago. The extinction was caused by climate change. The main cause of extinction was the vast amount of carbon dioxide emitted by volcanic eruptions that created the Siberian Traps, which elevated global temperatures and acidified the oceans.
