A stunning close-up of the unique basalt column formations in Stuðlagil Canyon, Iceland. The naturally formed hexagonal rock structures display dramatic curvature, created by the cooling and contraction of lava over thousands of years. The intricate geological patterns, combined with subtle moss growth and weathered textures, highlight the breathtaking natural artistry of Iceland’s volcanic landscape.
Porkchop Geyser's name derives from its pork chop-shaped sinter mound. Measuring around 2 feet in diameter, the geyser was once a tranquil hot spring until 1971 when it began erupting intermittently. In 1989, it experienced a violent hydrothermal explosion, scattering debris over 200 feet away and significantly altering its appearance. In that year, a visitor named David Kirwan died after attempting to rescue his friend's dog from the hot spring.

The site of extensive mining during the California gold rush, the degradation here was such that it inspired the first environmental laws in the United States. Now a state park.
Sheepeater Cliffs on the Grand Loop Road, south of Mammoth Hot Springs is named after the Shoshone people, also known as the Tukudika or 'Sheepeaters,' who once lived here. The cliffs are composed of columnar basalt, formed from lava flows about 500,000 years ago. The hexagonal columns were created as the lava cooled and contracted, resulting in the distinctive jointing patterns seen today. The site provides insights into the history and lifestyle of the native Shoshone people who utilised the area for hunting bighorn sheep and other resources.
