In the bay of Ngerchong Island there is a very large colony of this coral species, perfect habitat and shelter for many species. Shoulderbar Soldierfishes Myripristis kuntee in front and some Sammara Squirrelfish Neoniphon sammara behind. Myripristis kuntee occurs from 0-65m, max. length 26cm, common 16cm, Neoniphon samara occurs from 0-46m, max. length 32cm, common 23cm. The spine at the corner of its preopercle is venomous. The coral extends beautiful translucent tentacles at night. $Diploastrea heliopora occurs in the tropical Indo-West Pacific Ocean in a depth range from 3-15m from the Red Sea and East Africa to Western Australia, to the Ryukyu Islands and Fiji. This is one of the most easily recognised and least variable of all massive corals. The diameter of a single corallite is 8-10 millimetres. Diploastrea heliopora forms dense, robust, dome-shaped coral colonies.
