The area is in the Tularosa basin area with San Andres Mountains to the West and Sacramento Mountains to the East. Drifts in the the dunes can be 10' to 60' high. The dunes are a magical and unusual place in the Southwest. The wind-created ripples create a stunning visual of shadows of light and dark. As day light shifts into evening there is a stillness and a pastel glow of light on the sand and yuccas.

The San Andres mountains  are to the West and the Sacramento Mountains to the East with the Tularosa basin in between. The yuccas bloom in spring.
