Dash-and-dot goatfish Parupeneus barberinus occurs in the tropical Indo-Pacific from the Gulf of Aden and Oman, south on the east coast of Africa to Mossel Bay, South Africa, east to the islands of Micronesia, Line Islands, Marquesas Islands, and Tuamotu Archipelago, and from southern Japan to Australia and New Caledonia in a depth range from 0 to 100m, max. length 60cm, common length 30cm. \n\nIt is one of the most abundant species of Parupeneus. Adults, solitary or in small groups inhabit large sand patches as well as sand and rubble areas of reef flats, and lagoon and seaward reefs. \n\nThis specimen was encountered at night in its nocturnal coloration, when black and red being essentially invisible colors. \n\nTriton Bay, Indonesia, \n3°54'2.455 S 134°6'23.699 Eat 4m depth by night

Shadowfin Soldierfish Myripristis adusta occurs in the tropical Indo-Pacific, usually inhabits coral-rich areas of drop-offs and steep channel slopes from below the effects of surge to over 25 m. They occur singly or in small groups, sometimes with other species. It is a nocturnal species hiding in caves or beneath ledges by day, feeds on plankton such as crab larvae at night. Max. length 35cm, common 25cm. It is quite unusual to encounter this species over an open bright area like this specimen. Palau, Micronesia, 7°16'15.98 N 134°14'44.12 E at 19m depth

Foursaddle Grouper Epinephelus spilotoceps occurs in the tropical Indo-West-Pacific from East coast of Africa to the Line Islands. Except for its occurrence along the African coast (Zanzibar, Tanzania to Ponta Zavora, Mozambique) it seems to be primarily an insular species, occurring at most (probably all) of the islands of tropical Indian and west-central Pacific in a depth range from 0 to 30m, max. length 47cm. \n\nUsually species have a more ore less specific behaviour. Groupers are shy and have a long escape distance. This specimen was unusually curious and followed the photographer attentively for quite a while.\n\nTriton Bay, Indonesia \n3°54'2.346 S 134°6'32.099 E at 12m depth
