Georgetown,Guyana - January 11, 2014: The photo shows St. George's Cathedral it is an Anglican cathedral in Georgetown, Guyana and is one of the tallest wooden churches in the world, at a height of 43.5 metres or 143 ft. The building was completed in 1899. It is located on Church Street in Georgetown, and has been designated a National Monument.

Georgetown was founded as Longchamps in 1781 during the French occupation of the Essequibo and Demerara colonies. After the colonies were returned to the Netherlands in 1783, the town was named Stabroek, after Nicolaas Geelvinck, Lord of Stabroek (Belgium), one of the directors on the board of the Dutch West India Company. The colonies of Essequibo and Demerara were occupied by the British from 1796 to 1802 and from 1803 to 1814. In 1814 the colonies were officially transferred to the United Kingdom. The city subsequently received its current name, Georgetown, named after the British King George III.

Georgetown, Guyana: Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church - used and made infamous by death cult leader Jim Jones, who performed fake healings using blood from chicken and other animals - 19th century Jesuit church built to accommodate the growing community of Portuguese Catholics (mostly from Madeira). When the Catholic Church at Brickdam was destroyed in 1913, the Church of the Sacred Heart became the pro-cathedral. It suffered a serious fire in 2004 and had to be rebuilt - Main Street.
