The stadium of Delphi is located on a hill, beyond the Via Sacra and the Theatre. It was originally built in the 5th century BC and used for the Pythian Games. Near the end is the white stone starting line. The stone steps/seats were added under the Romans. It could seat 6500 spectators. The ancient Greeks considered Delphi to be the centre of the world and marked the place with a stone monument, a navel (omphalos). Delphi was the home of oracles that were consulted before important decisions were made. The sacred precinct is situated at the south-western slope of Mount Parnassus and is recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
