Here on June 25 and 26 of 1876, 263 soldiers, including Lt. Col. George A. Custer and attached personnel of the US Army, died fighting several thousand Lakota and Cheyenne warriors.

Baja California, Mexico, January 04 -- A representative of the Kumeyaay Indian community with traditional clothes visits an ancient sacred area and cemetery in the Indian reserve near the border between Mexico and the United States in the Tecate region in the state of Baja California, northern Mexico. The Kumeyaay, also known as Tipai-Ipai or Kumiai, are a tribe of indigenous peoples of the Americas who live between northern Mexico and southern California, along a binational territory straddling the border which is considered essential for their survival. The Kumeyaay people are known as the oak people, a tree considered sacred and a source of sustenance, warmth and protection.

Hartmannswillerkopf, ook wel bekend onder de naam Vieil Armand, is een berg in de Vogezen in het zuiden van de Elzas. De piek van de berg ligt op 956 meter boven de zeespiegel en naar het oosten heeft de bezoeker een vrij uitzicht over de vallei van de Rijn. Bij Hartmannswillerkopf werd tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog zwaar gevochten. De strijd tussen het Duitse en Franse leger leidde tot een loopgravenoorlog. Restanten van deze loopgraven en versterkingen zijn op deze locatie nog aanwezig.

The German war cemetery Bergheim, situated on Grasberg hill, contains 5,308 graves from the Second World War. They were brought together from 225 places in the Haut-Rhin region. This is one of several cemeteries in France where German soldiers killed in France are buried. The cemetery is maintained by the German war graves commission (Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge in German), established in 1919, which oversees cemeteries in 45 countries, Germany included, containing the graves of 2 million dead.
