Often overshadowed by Yellowstone National Park, its larger neighbor to the north, Jackson Hole and the Snake River Valley is a land of vast scenic beauty. What it lacks in geysers and hot springs, it more than makes up for in the rugged Teton Mountain Range. The Teton's many canyons lead to alpine meadows, cirques and towering peaks. It was this rugged range that became Wyoming's second national park in 1929. In 1950 the park boundaries were expanded to include much of the Snake River Valley. A diabase dike on Mount Moran. This is a vertical or near-vertical sheet of dark, fine-grained igneous rock that forms when molten rock intrudes into a crack and solidifies. Mount Moran, standing at 12,605 feet, is named after landscape painter Thomas Moran. It was first summitted in 1922 by a team led by LeGrand Hardy, Bennet McNulty, and Ben C Rich.

Teewinot Mountain (left) on Jenny Lake. The mountain is at 12,330ft (3,758m) sixth tallest on the Teton Range and it got its name from the Shoshoni word for 'many pinnacles'. Next to Teewinot is Mt St John and Rockchuck Peak. Jenny Lake, formed about 12,000 years ago by glaciers, was named for a Shoshone Indian woman who was the wife of an Englishman named Richard 'Beaver Dick' Leigh. Sadly Jenny and her six children were, in 1876, victims of smallpox.
