With a heart-shaped face, beige back and wings and pure white underparts, the Barn Owl is a distinctive and much-loved countryside bird.\n\nThe barn owl is predominantly nocturnal, but in Great Britain it can also hunt by day. Barn owls specialise in hunting animals on the ground, and nearly all of their food consists of small mammals, which they locate by sound, their hearing being very acute.\n\nThe owls usually mate for life unless one of the pair is killed, whereupon a new pair bond may be formed. Breeding results in a clutch of eggs, averaging about four in number, being laid in a nest in a hollow tree, old building, or fissure in a cliff. The female does all the incubation, and she and the young chicks are reliant on the male for food.\n\nBarn Owls also often live up to their name, inhabiting barns and other old, abandoned buildings, so keep an eye out for them there. However Barn Owls are a Schedule 1 and 9 species, meaning it's illegal to intentionally or recklessly disturb them, and it's also illegal to release them into the wild in the UK.
