Coral Hawkfish (Cirrhitichthys oxycephalus, aka Pixy Hawkfish, Sharp-headed Hawkfish), North Male Atoll, Maldives
Foursaddle Grouper Epinephelus spilotoceps occurs in the tropical Indo-West-Pacific from East coast of Africa to the Line Islands. Except for its occurrence along the African coast (Zanzibar, Tanzania to Ponta Zavora, Mozambique) it seems to be primarily an insular species, occurring at most (probably all) of the islands of tropical Indian and west-central Pacific in a depth range from 0 to 30m, max. length 47cm. \n\nUsually species have a more ore less specific behaviour. Groupers are shy and have a long escape distance. This specimen was unusually curious and followed the photographer attentively for quite a while.\n\nTriton Bay, Indonesia \n3°54'2.346 S 134°6'32.099 E at 12m depth
Synchiropus splendidus, the mandarinfish or mandarin dragonet, is a small, brightly colored member of the dragonet family. The mandarinfish is native to the Pacific, ranging approximately from the Ryukyu Islands south to Australia.

Spotted Hawkfish Cirrhitichthys aprinus occurs in tropical and some warm temperate marine waters of the Indo-Pacific from the Maldives to Indonesia and from the southern to central coasts of Western Australia and from northern Queensland to southern New South Wales in a depth range from 5-40m, max. length 12.5cm. \n\nThis specimen is propped up on its thickened lower pectoral fin rays at the edge of a Barrel Sponge Xestospongia testudinaria. This species, like most of the hawkfishes, is often observed motionless that way. \n\nTriton Bay, Kaimana Regency, West Papua Province, Indonesia, \n3°57'4.9417 S 134°8'1.0322 E at 21m depth

Blacktip Grouper Epinephelus fasciatus occurs in the tropical Indo-Pacific from the Red Sea to South Africa and eastward to the Pitcairn Group, north to Japan and Korea, south to the Arafura Sea, southern Queensland in Australia and Lord Howe Island in a depth range from 4-160m (usually 20-45m), max. length 40cm. Blacktip Grouper is common in outer reef slopes at depths below 15 m, and also occurs in protected bays and lagoons as shallow as 4 m. \nThis species exhibits a combination of simultaneous and sequential hermaphroditism. Smaller individuals within a social group are simultaneous hermaphrodites, while the largest often lose female function and reproduce exclusively as a male. \nThis specimen is looking out in a typical position, on the pectoral fins.\nTriton Bay, Kaimana Regency, West Papua Province, Indonesia \n3°56'26.082 S 134°7'36.63 E at 12m depth

Dwarf Hawkfish Cirrhitichthys falco occurs in the tropical Indo-Pacifis from the Maldives to the southern Great Barrier Reef in a depth range from 4 to 46m, usually 10 to 20m, max. length 7cm. This specimen is sitting in a Dendronephthya soft coral. \nDendronephthya sp. Soft Corals come in a spectacular range of colors and grow under overhangs and caves. These soft corals have huge distribution starting from the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean to Tonga, the Solomon Islands and the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. The species feeds almost exclusively on phytoplankton and occurs in shallow and deeper waters. \nThe stem of this Dendronephthya Soft Coral reveals the pattern of the sclerites. These spiny skeletal elements are important for the support of these corals, the spiky structure also deters predators and is useful in species ID. Each polyp has eight pinnate tentacles which it uses to capture nutrients suspended in the water column. \nLembeh Strait, Indonesia \n1°28'47.198 N 125°14'12.419 E at 13m depth by night
