A Striated, or Hairy frogfish sits in the dark waiting to ambush prey in Lembeh Strait, Indonesia. This well-camouflaged fish is rarely seen because it blends into its surroundings so well.
Hairy Frogfish Antennarius striatus occurs circum-subtropical in a depth range from 10 to 219m, max. length 25cm. Adult male specimen have more intense coloration and extended cutaneous appendages than females, for juveniles it's not yet distinctive. Devil Scorpionfish or False Stonefish Scorpaenopsis diabolus occurs in the tropical Indo-Pacific on rubble or weedy coralline-rock bottoms of reef flats and lagoon and seaward reefs in a depth range from 1-70m, max. length 30cm. \n\nScorpaenopsis diabolus is relatively uncommon. When disturbed, the species flashes its inner pectoral fins. The venomous dorsal sting can inflict a painful injury. The species occurs solitary like this specimen or in pairs and is often partly buried. \n\nThis specimen was encountered in the Lembeh Strait, Indonesia \n1°28'47.196 N 125°14'12.42 E at 22m depth

Painted Frogfish Antennarius pictus occurs in the tropical Indo-Pacific from the Red Sea and East Africa to the Hawaiian and Society islands in a depth range from 0 to 75m, max. length 30cm. \n\nThe species inhabits shallow sheltered reefs. Adults usually are with sponges, juveniles openly on sand or reef, mimicking small sponges or nudibranchs. Marking patterns and colour are highly variable. \n\nThe shape of this young Frogfish is already practically the same as the adult. Without the human fingernail, you would hardly believe that this animal is barely 1cm long.\n\nLembeh Strait, North Sulawesi, Indonesia\n1°27'13.1058 N 125°14'14.6331 E at 24m depth

The white frogfish head is one of the most distinctive features of this fascinating creature, commonly spotted around Mabul Island, Malaysia. Known for its unique, almost comical appearance, the frogfish has a bulbous, wide head and a large, flat body that allows it to blend effortlessly into its surroundings. The head is especially intriguing due to its specialized lure, a fleshy appendage called an esca, located on top of its head. This lure mimics the movement of small prey, such as shrimp or small fish, which the frogfish uses to attract its food.\n\nMabul’s clear, nutrient-rich waters and diverse coral reefs offer the perfect environment for frogfish, though they are often difficult to spot due to their incredible camouflage. The white color of some frogfish allows them to blend in seamlessly with lighter-colored corals and sponges, making them a challenge to find, even for experienced divers.\n\nEncounters with a white frogfish at Mabul are memorable, as they are slow-moving, ambush predators, relying on stealth rather than speed to capture prey. Their strange, endearing head and slow, deliberate movements make them a favorite subject for underwater photographers and a fascinating highlight of any dive around Mabul Island.
