A huge number of people visit Meiji-jingu Shrine during the New Year's days, to pray for their health and good luck for the year. During the New Year season, the South Sacred Gate is elaborately decorated to welcome the year with various signs, including the picture of Oriental zodiac. The year 2020 is the year of the rat. \nMeiji-jingu Shrine, a Shinto shrine, was established in 1920 and dedicated to Emperor Meiji (1852-1914) and his consort Empress Shoken (1850-1914); the great great grandparents of the current Emperor Naruhito. \nThe average number of people to visit Meiji-jingu Shrine during the first three days of New Year is said to be over 3 million, No 1 spot in the whole Japan.

Nijo Castle (Nijojo) was built in 1603 to serve as the Kyoto residence for Tokugawa Ieyasu (first shogun of the Edo Period).  Twenty three years later, his grandson completed the castle's palace buildings and further expanded it by adding a five story castle keep.  In 1994, the castle was designated a UNESCO world heritage site.  The photograph that you see here was captured during September of 2007.
