New Mexico has some of the flattest land as well as some of the most rugged mountains in the country. Some portions of the state are rich in pine forests, meadows, and fish-laden mountain streams, while other areas are devoid of any water bodies, and even cacti struggle to survive.

Native Americans and Spanish settlers carved symbols onto volcanic rocks from 400-700 years ago. These are a valuable record of spiritual and cultural expression by the early settlers. The Petroglyph National Monument protects one of the largest sites in North America.
The Great Plains meet the Rocky Mountains in Wyoming. The state is a great plateau broken by a number of important mountain ranges. In the northwest are the Absaroka, the Owl Creek, Wyoming, Gros Ventre, Wind River and the Teton ranges. In the north central are the Big Horns; in the northeast, the Black Hills; and in the southern portion of Wyoming, the Laramie, Medicine Bow and Sierra Madre ranges.

The first nuclear weapon (known as the trinity test) was detonated at this very spot in 1945.  It was 18 kilotons and is about 200 miles south of Los Alamos in New Mexico.  The building in the picture was an enclosure built to protect that last remnants of the green glass produced by the explosion.
