Mount Yufu is an active volcano located in Yufu City, Oita Prefecture, with an elevation of 1,583 meters. The mountain is designated as part of Aso-Kuju National Park. It consists of two peaks, the eastern peak and the highest western peak, and there is a first-class triangulation point at the summit at 1,583.28 meters. Due to its conical shape, it is also known as Bungo Fuji. Mount Yufu's unique mountain shape can be seen from various places in the Yufuin Basin, making it a landmark, and it can also be seen from Beppu Bay behind Mount Tsurumi. It has been revered as an object of faith since ancient times, and its name is recorded in the Kojiki and Bungo no Kuni Fudoki.
Mount Bandai (Bandaisan) is a 1816 meter tall, dormant volcano overlooking Aizu-Wakamatsu in western Fukushima Prefecture. One of the 100 famous mountains of Japan, it used to have a conical shape that earned it the nickname Aizu-Fuji due to is resemblance to Mount Fuji. However in 1888, Mount Bandai underwent the most devastating volcanic eruption in recent Japanese history, which drastically changed the mountain's shape and formed the Urabandai area behind the volcano.
