Rome, Italy – March 18, 2012: The ancient Colosseum of Rome from outside
The Colosseum or Coliseum in Rome is the largest amphitheater ever built. Built of concrete and sand, its construction began in A.D.72 and completed A.D,80. It could hold between 50,000 to 80,000 spectators, It was used for gladiatorial contests and public events such as mock sea battles, animal hunts, executions, dramas, and re-enactments of famous battles, The outer wall is estimated to have required 3.5 million cubic feet of travertine stone which were set without mortar. It has suffered extensive damage over the centuries mainly from earthquakes. Two hundred forty mast corbels were positioned around the top to support a retractable awning that kept the sun and rain off spectators. The arena comprised a wooden floor covered by sand underneath structure consisting of a two level network of tunnels and cages where gladiators and animals were held before

Soli Ancient Theater
It was built in 161 AD by the Athenian magnate Herodes Atticus in memory of his wife, Aspasia Annia Regilla. It was originally a steep-sloped amphitheater with a three-story stone front wall and a wooden roof made of expensive, cedar of Lebanon timber. It was used as a venue for music concerts with a capacity of 5,000. It lasted intact until it was destroyed and turned into a ruin by the Heruli in 267 AD. -
