The Rande Bridge is a cable-stayed bridge opened to traffic on February 7, 1981 and connects the municipalities of Redondela and Moaña, having an exit at the Domaio (Moaña) roundabout to connect with Vilaboa, the Morrazo Corridor and the banks of the Strait of Rande, in the Vigo estuary, 9 kilometers from the city of Vigo and 18 kilometers from the city of Pontevedra. It was designed by the Italian engineer Fabrizio de Miranda, the Spanish Florencio del Pozo (who was also in charge of the foundations) and by Alfredo Passaro. At the time of its construction, it was the second bridge of its kind with the longest span in the world. It is the first cable-stayed bridge to be extended in the world and won the European Award for Most Outstanding Metal Construction in 1979.\n\nThe Vigo estuary is the deepest and southernmost of the Rías Bajas of Galicia (Spain). It is located in the south of the province of Pontevedra, and extends in a northeasterly direction for a length of 35 km, from its mouth in Cabo Silleiro to its deepest point in Arcade, and with a maximum width of 15 km at the mouth, between Cape Home and Cape Silleiro, which narrows in Rande Strait to 600 meters. Its western access is protected by the Cíes islands, which are part of the Atlantic Islands National Park, in its interior are the islands of Toralla and San Simón, and to the north it borders the Morrazo peninsula. At its southern end are the Bay of Vigo and the Bay of Bayonne. Its easy access, deep draft and calm waters make the Vigo estuary an ideal refuge for sailing, and also for practicing water sports.
