Interior of Selimiye Mosque. The dome of Selimiye Camii is 31.5 meters in diameter. Its circumference surpasses that of Aya Sofya in Istanbul by a few centimeters, and Sinan considered the dome to be his lifetime achievement. Eight huge pillars set in an octagonal pattern support the dome and allow for the many small windows that illuminate the mosque's interior. The dome hangs 44 meters above the floor at its highest point, and is decorated with florid paintwork and Arabic script proclaiming the glory of Allah.
