The magnificent bronze statue of Perseus who raises the head of Medusa after cutting it, by Benvenuto Cellini and preserved in the Loggia Dei Lanzi, in Piazza della Signoria, in the historic heart of Florence, in Tuscany. Commissioned and strongly desired by Duke Cosimo de Medici, the statue of Perseus represents the cutting of every republican ambition of the city and the end of the ancient political divisions. According to mythological legend, Perseus killed Medusa by cutting off her head through the reflection on her shield, avoiding being petrified by her gaze. The Loggia dei Lanzi, an open structure with arch and columns designed by the architects Benci and Simone Talenti in 1376 on the right side of Piazza della Signoria, was used for the official ceremonies of the Florentine government.
