Mount Bandai (Bandaisan) is a 1816 meter tall, dormant volcano overlooking Aizu-Wakamatsu in western Fukushima Prefecture. One of the 100 famous mountains of Japan, it used to have a conical shape that earned it the nickname Aizu-Fuji due to is resemblance to Mount Fuji. Nagano, Japan -August 13, 2019: Lake Suwa is a lake in the Suwa Basin of Nagano Prefecture, spanning three cities: Okaya City, Shimosuwa Town, and Suwa City. The area is 12.81㎢. The largest lake in Nagano Prefecture.\nIn recent years, general freezing has decreased. The surface of the lake freezes over in winter, and the thickness of the ice reaches a certain level.\nAs the temperature rises during the day, the ice melts, and at night the temperature drops and the ice grows. After that, it expands and the area of the lake surface becomes insufficient.Cracks in the ice run up on the surface of the lake with a loud sound. This phenomenon is called 'omiwatari'.In the winter of the year when 'Omiwatari' appears, a Shinto ritual is held at Yatsurugi Shrine.\nThe record of 'Omiwatari' is from 1443.It continues to be recorded every year to this day. Some years are missing. However, as of 2022, it is an almost continuous weather record for about 577 years. It is a valuable resource in the world.
