The Elbe Sandstone Mountains, also called the Elbe Sandstone Highlands (German: Elbsandsteingebirge; Czech: Labské pískovce) is a mountain range straddling the border between the state of Saxony in southeastern Germany and the North Bohemian region of the Czech Republic, with about three-quarters of the area lying on the German side. The Main Building of the National Museum in Krakow was built in the years 1934-1989 according to the design of Czesław Boratyński, Edward Kreisler and Bolesław Szmidt, based on the earlier concept of Adolf Szyszko-Bohusz. The building, erected before the war, was converted into a casino by the Germans. After the war, work was undertaken to restore its planned shape and it was expanded. Currently, it serves as the headquarters of the National Museum in Krakow.

It was designed to house a single work of contemporary art: Antonio Canova’s white marble masterpiece Theseus Slaying the Centaur.
