Valeriana officinalis - Real valerian. Common name, Valerian.
Valerian (Valeriana officinalis, Caprifoliaceae) is a perennial flowering plant native to Europe and Asia. In the summer it bears sweetly scented pink or white flowers that attract many fly species, especially hoverflies of the genus Eristalis. Crude extract of valerian root may have sedative and anxiolytic effects, and is commonly sold in dietary supplement capsules to promote sleep. Valerian root is a cat and rat attractant
Very variable medium to tall perennial, to 1,5m; stems hairless. leaves pinnate or pinnately-lobed, toothed or untoothed, the lower long-stalked, the upper much smaller and unstalked. Flowers pink or white, hermaphrodite, 4-8mm long, in almost rounded clusters. Fruit hairy or hairless.\nHabitat: Meadows, ditches, damp shaded places.\nFlowering Season: June-August.\nDistribution: W Europe, Denmark, Iceland.\nIn the Netherlands the Species is very common along Ditches.\n\nVarian is well known as Herbal Medicine ( the Roots are used).
