A Pound Sterling is not always at the face value the Five Pound Banknote or a One Pound Coin, when it fails to pay for the same goods or services previously purchased. Price increases and the erosion of value by rising inflation destroys the face value of any currency. A pound coin might then only have Eighty Pence of Purchasing Power or a Five Pound Note, Four Pounds of Purchasing Power. Erosion of monetary value due to inflation is one of the root causes of a Cost of Living Crisis. An Eighty Pence Coin and a Four Pound Note illustrate this erosion of Purchasing Power when wages do not rise in tandem with inflation.
