The Colosseum, also known as Coliseum or the Flavian Amphitheatre, is located next to the Roman Forum in the center of the city of Rome, Italy. The Colosseum or Coliseum in Rome is the largest amphitheater ever built.  Built of concrete and sand, its construction began in A.D.72 and completed A.D,80.  It could hold between 50,000 to 80,000 spectators,  It was used for gladiatorial contests and public events such as mock sea battles, animal hunts, executions, dramas, and re-enactments of famous battles,  The outer wall is estimated to have required 3.5 million cubic feet of travertine stone which were set without mortar.  It has suffered extensive damage over the centuries mainly from earthquakes.  Two hundred forty mast corbels were positioned around the top to support a retractable awning that kept the sun and rain off spectators.  The arena comprised a wooden floor covered by sand underneath structure consisting of a two level network of tunnels and cages where gladiators and animals were held before
