Fort Pulaski National Monument is located on Cockspur Island between Savannah and Tybee Island, Georgia. It preserves Fort Pulaski, where in 1862 during the American Civil War, the Union Army successfully tested rifled cannon in combat, the success of which rendered brick fortifications obsolete. The fort was also used as a prisoner-of-war camp. The National Monument includes most of Cockspur Island (containing the fort) and all of adjacent McQueens Island.

Fort Pulaski is located near Savannah, GA. It was named Fort Pulaski in honor of Casimir Pulaski, a Polish soldier and military commander who fought during the American Revolution under the command of George Washington. Pulaski was a noted cavalryman, played a large role in training Revolutionary troops, and took part in sieges at Charleston and Savannah. Built as a modern coastal defense fort following the war of 1812, Fort Pulaski was rendered obsolete in 1862 when attacked by the Union army Advances in artillery such as rifled cannon provided longer range, more accurate fire which penetrated the 11-foot thick walls and force the Confederate defenders to surrender. This is the Gorge Wall at the rear of the fort. Most of the officers were housed in the rooms behind this wall. Defensive moat and drawbridge are visible.\nFort Pulaski National Monument\n08/15/2021
