Mosaics in Ravenna, Italy - Byzantines
An ancient altarpiece wit a religious icon depicting Santo Domingo de Guzmán (Saint Dominic) inside the Basilica of Santa Sabina on the Aventine Hill, in the historic heart of Rome. Built in the 5th century on the place where Santa Sabina (Saint Sabina) lived, this church is the oldest existing Roman basilica and one of the best preserved Early Christians churches in the world. Santa Sabina represents one of the first churches of Christianity, particularly famous for a cycle of religious scenes carved on its ancient wooden door, among the last surviving over the centuries, and for the columns of the central nave coming from a monument of the Roman imperial era. In 1219 the church was entrusted by Pope Honorius III to Saint Dominic and his preaching friars, becoming the seat of the Order of Dominican Friars. In 1980 the historic center of Rome was declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco. Image in high definition format.
