The Jan Wellem monument on the market square in Düsseldorf's Altstadt district was begun by the Italian-Flemish sculptor Gabriel Grupello in 1703 and erected in 1711. The baroque equestrian statue depicts Johann Wilhelm von Pfalz-Neuburg , the Elector Palatinate and Duke of Jülich-Berg , known as Jan Wellem by the people of Düsseldorf who spoke Low Franconian at the time . The plastic, which Grupello created on behalf of his electoral employer, is today one of Düsseldorf's landmarks.

The building was designed by Francis Johnson in the neoclassical Greek Revival style and completed in 1818.  It is the headquarters of An Post, the government owned national postal service.  During the 1916 Easter Rising, a pivotal moment in the struggle for Irish independence from Great Britain, the building became the headquarters for the rebellion.  It was destroyed by the British forces and rebuilt in 1929 by the Irish Free State.

People visit the Douaumont ossuary, a memorial containing the remains of some 130,000 soldiers who died on the battlefield during the Battle of Verdun in World War I. It is located in Douaumont, France, within the Verdun battlefield. During the 300 days of the Battle of Verdun (21 February 1916 -€“ 19 December 1916) at least 230,000 men died, though some estimates are much higher.
