Grand-Pré National Historic Site, was the centre of an Acadian settlement from 1682 to 1755 and the location of the Deportation of the Acadians, from 1755 until 1762.

It depicts Colonel Robert Gould Shaw leading members of the 54th Regiment Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry as it marched down Beacon Street on May 28, 1863 to depart the city to fight in the South.
