In the northwest are the Absaroka, the Owl Creek, Wyoming, Gros Ventre, Wind River and the Teton ranges. In the north central are the Big Horns; in the northeast, the Black Hills; and in the southern portion of Wyoming, the Laramie, Medicine Bow and Sierra Madre ranges.

Castle Geyser was named in 1870 by the Washburn-Langford-Doane Expedition due to its striking resemblance to the ruins of a castle. It has one of the oldest and largest sinter cones in Yellowstone, indicating that it has been active for thousands of years.
