One of the initiators of the construction of the new temple was Emperor Franz Joseph I, who in 1869 visited the Franciscans in the Holy Land and then allocated appropriate funds for this purpose. The monastery adjacent to the church is the seat of the Custody of the Holy Land, a Franciscan institution responsible for all Christian facilities belonging to the Catholic Church in the Middle East.
