The acorn, or oak nut, is the nut of the oaks and their close relatives (genera Quercus and Lithocarpus, in the family Fagaceae). It usually contains a single seed (rarely two seeds), enclosed in a tough, leathery shell, and borne in a cup-shaped cupule.

Acorns are the characteristic fruit of the holm oak, an emblematic tree of the Iberian Peninsula. These fruits play a crucial role in the diet of Iberian pigs, especially during the montanera, when they feed almost exclusively on them to develop the unique flavour of Iberian acorn-fed ham. Acorns ripen and fall from the tree in autumn, also being a food resource for other animals such as squirrels. In addition, acorns have been used by humans in food and in the production of flour and oils, standing out for their high nutritional value.
