African Iris or Fortnight Lily from South Africa - Dietes bicolor

$Dietes iridioides, commonly called African Iris and Fortnight Lily, comes from eastern and southern Africa. It is a rhizomatous, evergreen perennial that generally resembles iris and grows 2-4’ tall. It produces fan-shaped clumps of iris-like, narrow, sword-shaped, basal, evergreen leaves. Flowers appear on branched stalks. In frost-free areas, plants bloom spring to fall and intermittently throughout winter. Flowers last one day, but are quickly replaced. Each flower (to 3” wide) is white with yellow and blue markings. Each flower stalk carries a large supply of buds.\nThe name fortnight lily is based on the blooming cycle of the flowers, where new blooms come up approximately every two weeks.$

The Fortnight lily gets its name from its recurring two week flowering cycle during spring and into summer time! This is a narrow leaved species that grows to 30 inches tall with medium green leaves that quickly grows to form dense clumps in gardens and landscapes. Also known as the Dietes. It's a genus of rhizomatous plants of the family Iridaceae, first described as a genus in 1866. Common names include wood iris, fortnight lily, African iris, Japanese iris and butterfly iris, each of which may be used differently in different regions for one or more of the six species within the genus.

The Rocky Mountain Iris (Iris missouriensis) is easily identified because it is the only iris species growing east of the Sierra Nevada and Cascade mountain ranges.
