The glacier and surrounding landscape is protected as part of the Mendenhall Glacier Recreation Area, a federally designated unit of the Tongass National Forest.

Bear Glacier flows among the Chugach Mountain Range on the Kenai Peninsula in Alaska. Dramatic heavy fog descends above, leaving a natural peephole in the distance through which substantial glacial snowdrift is visible. Blue glacial ice and dark soil-silt give dramatic texture and striation to the glacier's surface.
