White Pass was the gateway to the Yukon during Alaska's Klondike Gold Rush. This pass had to be traversed on foot by most miners, and they had to carry supplies for the mining season. Because of the difficulty of the journey, many miners failed to get to the mines. However, in 1898, the White Pass and Yukon Railway was constructed between the coastal town of Skagway and the mines in Whitehorse, Yukon. This railroad is one of the few operating narrow-gauge railways and offers the trip to the summit at the Canadian Border to tourists.
