Moonstone also known as Sandakada Pahana is a carved semi-circulair stone slab, usually placed at the bottom of staircases and entrances. The design and the place where they were placed changed over the centuries. This picture shows the one from the Anuradhapura period. The most obvious carvings here are a procession of swans and a band of four animals, being elephants, lions horses and bulls. They symbolize the four noble truths.
