A Snowy Plover (Charadrius nivosus) in breeding plumage looks for for along a sandy beach in northern Chile. The species is distributed mainly along the west coasts of North and South America and is regarded by conservationists as Near-Threatened due to expanding development of coastal habitats throughout its range.

A Snowy Plover (Charadrius nivosus) on a beach in Santa Barbara, Southern California.  The Snowy Plover is a very small shorebird that breeds along the Pacific and Gulf Coasts of the United States, as well as several scattered inland areas.  It also breeds along the Pacific coast of South America from Ecuador south.  Because of its requirement to breed on sandy beaches, it is negatively impacted by human activities and populations have declined moderately throughout its range.  It is listed as Near Threatened by the IUCN.
