Four antenna pods of an 'Identification Friend or Foe' (IFF) system. The IFF is an electronic equipment used by military aircraft to determine whether other aircraft or systems in the vicinity are friendly or hostile. Its primary purpose is to prevent friendly fire and enhance situational awareness in combat zones, allowing pilots to differentiate between allies, neutral entities, or unknown / enemy contacts. An IFF system typically consists of a transponder and an interrogator. The transponder responds to interrogation signals from other systems, while the interrogator sends out signals to identify aircraft. Operating in multiple modes, including civilian and military, the system often uses encryption for secure communication. When an interrogator sends a radio signal, a compatible transponder on the target aircraft replies with encoded information, such as its identity or status. This response is analyzed to classify the target. However, the IFF system has limitations: it requires both the interrogator and target to have compatible and functional systems, and it does not replace the need for visual identification or other methods of threat assessment in complex scenarios.

A fighter jet refueling probe is a component for aerial refueling operations, allowing combat aircraft to extend their operational range and endurance. Typically mounted on the nose or upper fuselage, the probe extends forward to connect with the drogue or basket of a tanker aircraft's refueling hose. When engaged, fuel is transferred from the tanker to the fighter jet. Probes vary in design but generally consist of a telescopic or fixed structure ending in a nozzle that interfaces with the tanker's refueling system. This system enables fighters like the Eurofighter (pictured), F/A-18 Hornet and F-16 Fighting Falcon to undertake longer missions or loiter in combat areas without needing to return to base. The successful operation of the probe demands precision piloting and coordination between both aircraft involved in the refueling process. Aerial refueling, also referred to as air refueling, in-flight refueling (IFR), mid-air refueling, air-to-air refueling (AAR), and tanking, is the process of transferring aviation fuel from one aircraft (the tanker) to another (the receiver) while both aircraft are in flight.
