An old deportation freightcar, once used to transport victims to Auschwitz-Birkenau during the Holocaust, sits under a clear blue sky at the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum. From 1940 to 1945, these cattle cars, also known as 'Rinderwagen' or 'Schwellenwagen,' carried millions of Jews and other persecuted groups to their deaths. Now a symbol of remembrance, this boxcar is part of the historical narrative of Nazi atrocities, urging reflection on the horrors of the past and the importance of education for future generations.
There where during the second World War the railway to Durchgangslager Westerbork finished, the queen at that time, Queen Juliana of the Netherlands, has unveiled a monument, existing of a 40 meters long railway and an upwards bent rail. From this camp much people, like Jews, Gypsy and others, has been transported in cattle wagons to Germany. From a watch post the guards observed people.
Specialist restorers restoring a historic boxcar at Birkenau. Cattle cars, known as Rinderwagen or Schwellenwagen, were used by the Nazis to deport millions of Jews and other persecuted groups to extermination camps like Auschwitz-Birkenau. Up to 100 people were packed into each freight car with no food, water, or sanitation during journeys that often lasted several days; many died en route. On arrival, most were sent directly to the gas chambers. Today, a preserved boxcar at Birkenau stands as a powerful symbol of remembrance and the industrial scale of the Holocaust.

Iconic Lombardy poplars, with their tall, narrow trunks and upright branches, line the grounds in stark contrast to the horrific history of the camp. These trees, a variety of poplar known for their columnar shape, were planted along the camp’s pathways and borders, symbolizing the eerie stillness of the site today. In the foreground, the railroad tracks that once carried millions of Jews and other victims to their deaths also remain. These tracks lead to the notorious selection platform, where those arriving were either sent to forced labor or immediately to the gas chambers.
