I followed a family of Bald Eagles as they raised two chicks and became an everyday part of their routine. I would announce my arrival with a special whistle so as not to startle them when I appeared. When the chicks started flying, I came to the nest one morning and no birds were there, but when I whistled, the young ones came from opposite directions back to the nesting tree to visit.

The Golden Eagle (Aquila chrysaetos) is a large, widely distributed bird of prey living in the Northern Hemisphere. They are dark brown, with lighter golden-brown plumage on the nape of the neck. Juvenile golden eagles have white on the tail and white markings on the wings. Golden eagles are fast and agile, using their powerful feet and large, sharp talons to catch a variety of prey, including rabbits, marmots and other ground squirrels. They build large nests in cliffs and other high places. They may return to the same nest for their breeding years. They breed in the spring and a pair may remain together for several years or for life. The female golden eagle will lay up to four eggs, and then incubate them for six weeks. One or two hatchlings will typically survive and fledge in about three months. The juveniles will become fully independent in the fall when they will wander until establishing their own territory in four or five years.
