Clock tower of The Palace of Westminster (or Houses of Parliament) in London on a sunny morning isolated against clear blue sky. The tower is officially known as Elizabeth Tower. Previously known simply as the Clock Tower, it was renamed to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of Elizabeth II in 2012. Big Ben is the nickname for the great bell of the clock, but is often extended to include the name both the clock and the tower itself. The tower is located at the north end of the Palace of Westminster in the City of Westminster on the north bank of the River Thames. The Elizabeth Tower was completed in 1859 and the Great Clock started on 31 May, with the Great Bell's strikes heard for the first time on 11 July and the quarter bells first chimed on 7 September.
