The Red Knot (Calidris canutus) is a medium-sized shorebird that breeds in the Arctic and sub-Arctic regions and migrates long distances to winter in southern regions. During the breeding season, they have a reddish-brown plumage, while their non-breeding plumage is grayish. They feed on invertebrates such as mollusks, crustaceans, and marine worms, with horseshoe crab eggs being a particularly important food source during their migration stopovers along the Atlantic coast of North America. Red Knot populations are currently threatened due to habitat loss, hunting, and the effects of climate change on their food sources and breeding areas. The species is considered to be of ecological significance due to its role in the food web and its use as an indicator of ecosystem health.
