Today, because of overfishing in certain areas, White Pelicans are forced to fly long distances to find food. Great white pelicans are exploited for many reasons. Their pouch is used to make tobacco bags, Their skin is turned into leather, the guano is used as fertiliser, and the fat of young pelicans is converted into oils for traditional medicine in China and India. Human disturbance, loss of foraging habitat and breeding sites, and pollution are all contributing to the decline of the Great White Pelican.

A winter-plumaged American White Pelican (Pelecanus erythrorhynchos) on a pond at a private fishing lake in Riverside County, Southern California. The White pelican has the second longest wingspan of any bird in North America after the California Condor, and can weigh up to 13.6 kg (30 lbs). In breeding plumage, they acquire a horny plate on the upper bill and spiky white feathers on their crown. They winter in the southern half of the United States through Mexico and Central America and breed from northern California to northern Canada.

The Australian pied cormorant, also known as the pied cormorant, pied shag, or great pied cormorant, is a medium-sized member of the cormorant family. It is found around the coasts of Australasia.

Beautiful American white pelicans flock to Wisconsin every Spring. Their presence is often seen as a symptom of climate change, as they didn't come to Wisconsin until 1999. Here, some pelicans are fighting over a fish in one's beak, but not yet swallowed.
