Luscious blackberry fruit ripe for the picking, but what is that fuzzy grey growth? Probably the fungus (Botrytis cinerea) or similar. Fruit rot is a disease / condition caused when the blackberry fruit cannot quickly dry after rain. When this infection happens commercially, the remedy is to provide more air circulation. Blackberries ((Rubus fruticosus)) are an aggregate fruit composed of a number of small drupes, and each little drupe is called a drupelet. Blackberries are packed with antioxidants, including vitamin C and ellagic acid, which have long been recognised as effective against colds and flus. Ellagic acid is even mentioned in connection with the battle against cancer. In addition, the small seeds within the berries make them a good source of fibre. Blackberries are a primary source of antioxidants.
